The workings of the human mind are complex. To help us understand how we think most, people accept that there is a conscious mind and an unconscious mind. This is a very helpful way of conceiving of our minds because it helps us understand why we do what we do.

Let’s take smoking as an example. Mr Giveup can say to his friends, “I don’t want to smoke any more,” and really mean it, yet somehow his arm reaches for a cigarette, his lips clasp it, his thumb strikes the lighter. If he doesn’t want to smoke, who’s in control of his arms, lips and thumb? Some part of him is stuck on the old behaviour.

There is no one answer to why Mr Giveup is still smoking, people smoke for all sorts of reasons. What is important is that his conscious awareness of his problem and his stated desire to quit has not been enough to change his behaviour.  His unconscious mind needs to play its part.

The control that your unconscious mind has over your actions is fundamental to how you live. You wouldn’t get much done if you had to pay conscious attention to the 20,000 breaths you take every day, or for every 135,000 beats of your heart a day. And your unconscious does not stop at basic physical functions - it can be in charge of some incredibly complicated processes too - do you remember learning to drive; every gear change, every touch of the brakes was hard work. After a while you can chat to your passenger all the way home without once thinking about what gear you are in. Your unconscious is acting as your auto-pilot.

Your unconscious is moving you into auto-pilot all the time. For some people it makes them eat when they are not hungry; for some people it makes them smoke when they know it could kill them; for some people it makes them bite their nails even though they know they won’t like what they look like afterwards; and the list goes on.

As a Cognitive Hypnotherapist, I will work with you to connect with your unconscious mind and help you get it to work with you to achieve your life goals and overcome your problems.

Re-connecting your unconscious mind to your aspirations can be a hugely positive force for change. When your auto-pilot takes you in the direction you want it to go you can let go of your issues and deliver that positive change in your life.

I am always happy to have a chat with you about how you can move forward in your life and leave behind the unwanted aspects of yourself. You can contact me by email or phone, see Contact for the details.
